Students will absorb information on a general news topic (like politics/sports/arts, not a specific story) from three media sources you have never (or hardly ever) read/watched/listened to before (could be anything from The Wall Street Journal to RT to Vice, or even influential blogs/YouTubers) and spend some time doing a deep dive into their content for a few days, at least. Then, based on what you have seen, heard or read, you will provide insight and analysis about the general substance and style presented by each source and how the news comes across and is transmitted differently from the other sources you have selected. [1000-1200 words]
You SHOULD all compare how each news outlet/organization reported on the SAME general topic.
So, for example, you could compare how Morning Edition (NPR), the LA Times and Grantland all cover sports stories.
Or you could compare how The Hollywood Reporter, Vanity Fair and the NY Times all cover entertainment stories.
Or you could compare how New York Magazine, Washington Post, and Good Morning America all cover food.
Explore what each media organization/outlet does to cover the topic, what distinguishes their coverage, what the writing is like, what the visuals/photos are like, or any other analytical takeaways you picked up on about the reporting style.
One possible way to approach this is to have a very short introduction describing what you are doing in your assignment (10-20 words). Then you may want to break the assignment into three sections that could each be around 300-350 words. You could then have a conclusion that is about 150-300 words in which you indeed compare the different ways the topic has been covered (despite what I said in the morning session). However, you can arrange the assignment differently if you want, as long as it comes to fewer than 1,200 words.
